Describe the general principles of scene safety as per the SOP
Responsibility of all team members
Do not leave the vehicle until its deemed safe
Dynamically risk assess
Shared situational awareness
Ensure all safety critical info is passed to control
Describe the required PPE for all crew as per the Safety at scene SOP
Helmet on the car and aircraft
High vis
Toe capped boots
Body armour
Flight suits made of nomex
Flight helmet with working visor
Describe the road traffic collisions section of the safety at scene SOP
- Liaise with police and fire
- Hard hats/high vis as required
- Close the road
- Be cautious on approach of a large debris field
- Report oil/fuel leakage to fire service
- Be aware of vehicle cargo, consult hazard warnings
- Ensure ignitions are off, handbrakes applied and chocked
- Be aware of undeployed air bags
- Patient remains remains responsibility of clinical team
- Be careful of O2 therapy due to potential fire risk
Describe the Motorway incidents section of the safety at scene SOP
- Try and approach using the reported carriageway in the direction of normal traffic
- Always wear high vis
- Can approach via reverse access if implemented by police/fire/highways england
- Never hop the central reservation
- Clear the carriageway as quickly as possible
Describe the working near water section of the safety at scene SOP
- Request RNLI, HMC, FRS or HART as appropriate
- Don’t work within 3 metres of water
- Assess type of water
Gather info re tides and mud - Caution as we don’t have life jackets
Describe the assaults/stabbings/shootings section of the safety at scene SOP
- Body armour
- Consider leaving observers in the vehicle/at base
- Don’t approach until Police on scene
- RVP
- Don’t approach if in doubt
- Can land away from RVP
- Regularly review scene safety
Describe the industrial areas/building sites section of the safety at scene SOP
- Identify the Foreman/Health and Safety manager in charge
- Confirm if fire service is necessary/requested
- Pay attention to info boards at entrances
- Assess need for high vis/helmets
- Consider specialist assets as appropriate
- If confined space, establish emergency evac plan, always request HART
- Beware high flow O2 due to build-up and fire risk
Describe the electrocutions section of the safety at scene SOP
- Request fire
- Ensure supply off
- Be aware patient may have been thrown
- Be aware of conductive media
- Consider support from electricity supplier
Describe the working at height section of the safety at scene SOP
- Not expected to work at height, HART should be requested
- Perform dynamic risk assessment if there is an unacceptable delay in patient care
