SAFE WORK ONE Flashcards
WHAT IS SAFEWORKING?
SET OF RULES PROCEDURES AND STRUCTURES DESIGNED TO ENSURE:
THE SAFE OPERATION OF TRAINS
THE PROTECTION OF PEOPLE AND PROPERTY
SAFEWORKING SYSTEMS ARE BASED ON
THE PRINCIPLE THAT THERE MUST BE SEPARATION OF ANY TRAIN OCCUPYING A SECTION OF TRACK FROM ANY OTHER TRAIN FROM:
ANY OTHER TRAIN
VEHICLE OR
PEOPLE ON OR NEAR THE RAIL TRK
WHAT IS A SAFE PLACE?
PLACE WHERE YOU AND YOUR EQUIP CANNOT BE STRUCT BY RAIL TRAFFIC
WHAT IS THE DANGER ZONE?
ALL SPACE WITHIN 3 M HORIZONTALLY FROM THE OUTER MOST RAIL AND ANY DISTANCE ABOVE OR BELOW THIS 3 M UNLESS A SAFE PLACE EXISTS OR CAN BE CREATED
WHAT IS WALKING IN THE DANGER ZONE?
WALKING FROM ONE PLACE IN THE DZ AND DOING NO WORK OTHER THAN PLACING OR REMOVING PROTECTION
WORKERS MUST NOT WALK IN THE DZ UNLESS AN EASILY REACHED SAFE PLACE IS AVAIL, AND THERE IS NO PRACTICABLE ALTERNATIVE
SAFETY STEPS FOR WALKING IN THE DZ
WEAR APPROVED HIGH VIS CLOTHING
LOOK FREQ IN BOTH DIRECTIONS FOR APP RAIL TFC
CARRY A LGT AT NGT, IN TUNNELS, AND WHEN VIS IS LIMITED
AND
NOT STEP ON OR WITHIN PTS
TRAIN CREW PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
OPERATE TRAINS AND TRACK VEHICLES FOR SAFE AND EFFICIENT TRANSIT OF RAIL TFC THROUGH THE SYD TRAINS NETWORK
RESP TRAIN CREW
MUST MAKE SURE THAT TRAINS AND TRACK VEHICLES CAN BE OPERATED SAFELY BEFORE THEY ENTER AND DURING TRAVEL IN THE SYD TRAINS NETWORK
TRAIN CREW WILL COMPLETE A TRAIN PREP BEFORE THE FIRST RUN OF THE TRAIN EACH DAY
TRAIN CREW MUST:
BE QUALIFIED TO OPERATE THE RAIL TFC THEY DRIVE IN THE SYD TRAINS NETWORK
BE QUALIFIED IN THE SYSTEMS OF SAFEWORKING RELEVANT TO THEIR AREA OF OPERATION
COOPERATE WITH NETWORK CONTROLLERS, PILOTS OR OTHER AUTHORISED PERSONS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR DUTIES
DELEGATE DUTIES ONLY TO QUALIFIED WORKERS
RVDS
RAIL VEHICLE DETECTION SYSTEM
RVDS PREVENTS
PREVENTS FOLLOWING RAIL TFC FROM ENTERING AN OCCUPIED BLOCK
WHAT DETECTS THE PRESENCE OF RAIL TFC
TRACK CIRCUITS OR AXLE COUNTERS
RUNNING SIGNALS MODES
ABSOLUTE
OR
PERMISSIVE
RUNNING SIGNALS

WHAT DOES PROCEED MEAN?
ANY OTHER THAN STOP
CONTROLLED
OUTER HOME OR ACCEPT
CONTROLLED SIGNAL USED TO CONTROL ENTRY TO THE BLOCK AHEAD BUT NOT OTHERWISE PROTECT PTS OR OTHER IDENTIFIED RISKS
CONTROLLED
HOME
USED TO PROTECT PTS AND OTHER IDENTIFIED RISKS
SOME HOME SIGNALS ARE KEPT PERMANENTLY AT STOP
FIXED RED SIGNALS
CONTROLLED
STARTING
USED TO AUTHORISE DEP FROM A CONTROLLED AREA
CONTROLLED
HOME/ STARTING
FUNCTION AS HOME AND STARTING SIGNAL
CONTROLLED
DISTANT
USUALLY SHOWS ONLY CLEAR OR CAUTION
AND
CANNOT BE USED TO PROTECT THE PORTION OF LINE TO THE NEXT SIGNAL
SOME CONTROLLED DISTANT SIGNALS CAN SHOW STOP AND CAN BE USED TO PROTECT THE PORTION OF LINE TO THE NEXT SIGNAL
DISTANT WARNS OF FOLLOWING SIGNAL, steep hill as an example
AUTOMATIC
AUTOMATIC
PROTECTS THE BLOCK AHEAD
DISPLAYS A PROCEED INDICATION ONLY IF THE BLOCK AHEAD IS UNOCCUPIED
AUTOMATIC
DISTANT
AS PER CONTROLLED DISTANT
WARNS OF UPCOMING SIGNAL
RUNNING SIGNALS ARE USED FOR:
AUTHORISE THROUGH MOVEMENTS FROM ONE RUNNING SIGNAL TO THE NEXT
CLEARED SIGNAL INDICATES BY:
COMBINATION OF LTS
ROUTE INDICATOR
LOWER TURNOUT UNIT
CONTROLLED SIGNALS DEFAULT TO?
STOP
EXCEPT FOR DISTANT SIGNALS
AUTOMATIC SIGNALS DEFAULT TO?
G
G
PROCEED
CONTROLLED SIGNALS ARE OPERATED BY?
SIGNALLERS
TRACK CIRCUITS AND SIGNALLERS
CONTROLLED SIGNALS CAN DISPLAY PROCEED ONLY IF:
PTS IN THE RTE IN CORRECT POSITION
NO CONFLICTING RTES SET
IN RVDS THE BLOCK AHEAD IS UNOCCUPIED
CONTROLLED SIGNALS AT ATTENDED LOCATIONS
ABSOLUTE
AUTOMATIC SIGNALS CONTROLLED BY:
EXCLUSIVELY BY TRK CIRCUITS
AUTOMATIC SIGNAL DISPLAYS PROCEED:
IF THE LINE IS UNOCCUPIED AS FAR AS THE OVERLAP PT BEYOND THE NEXT SIGNAL
AUTOMATIC
PERMISSIVE????
ARE PERMISSIVE
CAN BECOME ABSOLUTE IF:
DESIGNATED BY SIGN
INTERLOCKED WITH TRACKSIDE MONITORING EQUIP THAT SETS THEM AT STOP
CAN BE OPERATED BETWEEN AUTO AND CONTROLLED
HOW TO DETERMINE AND AUTOMATIC SIGNAL
STAGGERED LTS
A PLACARDED OR LIGHT
SINGLE LT WITH STAGGERED MARKER LT

MARKER LT IS LIT IF:
SIGNAL AT STOP
OR
MAIN LT FAILS
SINGLE LT COLOUR LT WITH STAGGERED MARKER LT
DISTANT SIGNALS
YELLOW MARKER LT which is lit if main light fails
SOME DISTANT SIGNALS INDICATE STOP IF THE LINE BETWEEN THE DISTANT SIGNAL AND THE NEXT SIGNAL IS OCCUPIED
SINGLE LT COLOUR LTS WITH IN LINE MARKER LIGHT
CONTROLLED SIGNALS
OR
AUTOMATIC SIGNALS IF ‘A’
MARKER LT IS LIT IF:
SIGNAL AT STOP OR
MAIN LGT FAILS
LOWER TURNOUT UNITS
PROCEED INDICATION DIAGONAL YELLOW LGTS
THE ROW OF LTS IS ANGLED UP TOWARDS THE TURNOUT RTE
CO ACTING SIGNALS
PROVIDES INFORMATION ABOUT AN OBSCURED SIGNAL
MAY HAVE:
SIGN SHOWING CO ACTING, INDICATOR OR AN ABBREV
REPEATER SIGNALS
PROVIDES INFO ABOUT INDICATION OF THE NEXT SIGNAL
COLOUR LT REPEATERS DISPLAY STOP IF LINE BETWEEN THE REPEATER SIGNAL AND THE NEXT SIGNAL IS OCCUPIED
WARNING ABOUT REPEATER
A REPEATER SIGNAL WILL NOT NECESSARILY DISPLAY THE ACTUAL INDICATION OF THE NEXT SIGNAL AS ITS PURPOSE IS TO GIVE EARLY INFO ABOUT THAT INDICATION
LED REPEATER SIGNALS
FOUR SMALL LIGHTS

RVDS INTERLOCKING OF TRAIN CIRCUITS PREVENTS A PROCEED INDICATION UNLESS:
BLOCK BEYOND SIGNAL IS NOT OCCUPIED
NO CONFLICTING RTES SET
THE PTS ARE CORRECTLY SET
RVDS IS USED ON:
SINGLE LINES
FOR BIDIRECTIONAL MOVEMENTS
DOUBLE LINES
FOR BI AND UNI
WHO AUTHORISES ENTRY AND EXIT FROM A SECTION
CONTROLLED SIGNALS AUTHORISES ENTRY TO AND EXIT FROM A SECTION
