What is ringworm?
fungal infection can affect the: body - tinea corporis groin - tinea cruris scalp - tinea capitis
Is ringworm contagious?
contagious
spread via direct contact with it, animals, objects
What are the symptoms of ringworm?
red/pink patches
- ring shaped
- single or multiple
- flat or raised
ringed patch with a clear centre and advancing red edge
- asymmetrical distribution
can form larger lesions and coalesce
What is the treatment for ringworm?
refer for the scalp
terbafine - most effective, best at preventing reinfection
imidazoles
- clotrimazole
- miconazole
- econazole
hydrocortisone
- for inflammation, itching
- maximum 7 day treatment once a day
What are practice measures for ringworm?
wear loose fitting clothes
wash affected area daily
avoid scratching
avoid sharing clothes, towels, flannels
wash bedlinen frequently
When is it suitable for people with ringworm to freely socialise?
not required to stay home
What is mumps?
viral infection
- paramyxovirus
primarily affects the parotid glands = pair of glands that produce saliva
- one or both may be affected
Is mumps contagious?
contagious
spread via contact with throat secretions - saliva
What are the symptoms for mumps?
preceded by non-specific treatment
- headache, earache, muscle ache, fever, joint pain
parotitis
- swollen glands in the throat
- tender/ painful to touch
What is the incubation period and contagious period for mumps?
incubation - 14-25 days
contagious - 2-5 days before and after parotitis onset
What is the treatment for mumps?
no cure
symptomatic treatment
What are the practical measures for mumps?
self limiting disease
- resolves within 1-2 weeks
drinks lots of water/ fluids
paracetamol for pain, fever, headache
apply a warm or cold compress to the glands to ease discomfort
When is it suitable for people with mumps to freely socialise?
notifiable disease
must stay home at least 5 days after parotitis onset
What are the bacterial diseases?
meningitis
impetigo
scarlet fever
