How can the first professional standard be met?
make the care of the person your first priority
obtain consent
respect and safeguard the person’s dignity
recognise your own values and beliefs but do not impose them on other people
take responsibility for ensuring that person-centred care is not compromised because of personal values and beliefs
How can the second professional standard be met?
by demonstrating effective team working
work with others to make sure there is continuity of care for the person concerned
adapting your communication to bring about effective partnership working
How can the third professional standard be met?
it is the exchange of information between people
overcoming barriers to communication
listening actively and responding to the information you receive in a timely manner
checking the person has understood the information they have been given
How can the fourth professional standard be met?
recognise and work within the limits of your knowledge and skills, and refer to others when needed
carry out a range of continuing professional development (CPD) activities relevant to their practice
record their development activities to demonstrate that their knowledge and skills are up to date
How can the fifth professional standard be met?
use your judgement to make clinical and professional decisions with the person or others
practise only when fit to do so
recognise the limits of their competence
How can the sixth professional standard be met?
being polite and considerate
treating people with respect and safeguard their dignity
maintaining appropriate personal and professional boundaries with the people you provide care to and with others
being trustworthy and acting with honesty and integrity
How can the seventh professional standard be met?
reflect on your environment and take steps to maintain the person’s privacy and confidentiality
ensure that everyone in the team understands the need to maintain a person’s privacy and confidentiality
do not discuss information that can identify the person when the discussions can be overheard or seen by others not involved in their care
How can the eighth professional standard be met?
support people who raise concerns and provide feedback
challenge poor practice and behaviours and report it appropriately
promote and encourage a culture of transparency, learning and improvement
How can the ninth professional standard be met?
contribute to the education, training and development of the team or of others
delegate tasks only to people who are competent and appropriately trained
lead by example, in particular to those who are working towards registration
