A

National Health Service 1946
formally opened July 5th 1948

purpose was to promote the establishment of a comprehensive health service designed to secure an improvement in the physical and mental health of the people of England and Wales and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness

A

Beveridge Report 1942

  • the government commissioned a report on how Britain would be rebuilt after World War 2
  • was the basis for post-war reforms
  • says all working people should pay a weekly contribution and in return benefits would be paid to people who were sick, unemployed, retired and widowed

A

A

regulates all health and adult social care services in England
- pharmacies are the exception
inspects quality of care provided

protects interest of those detained under the Mental Health Act
- makes sure that essential standards of quality and safety are being met where care is provided, from hospitals to private care homes.
