When was the NHS established (act and put into action)? What was the purpose of the NHS?
National Health Service 1946
formally opened July 5th 1948
purpose was to promote the establishment of a comprehensive health service designed to secure an improvement in the physical and mental health of the people of England and Wales and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness
How is the NHS funded and who is eligible?
funded through central taxation
everyone is eligible
- based on clinical need rather than ability to pay
- free at point of use
What is the Beveridge Report? When was the Beveridge Report established?
Beveridge Report 1942
- the government commissioned a report on how Britain would be rebuilt after World War 2
- was the basis for post-war reforms
- says all working people should pay a weekly contribution and in return benefits would be paid to people who were sick, unemployed, retired and widowed
What are the three levels of care and examples?
Primary care - GPs, Dentists, Pharmacists, Optometrist Secondary care - hospital based = in or out patient Tertiary care - specialised care
What are the different sections of the NHS?

What is the function of NHS England?
merged with NHS improvement in 2019
improve health outcomes for people in England
oversee the commission, planning and buying of services

= focuses finance and use of resources, operational performance, strategic change
What is the function of Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs)?
identify local health needs and then plan and buy services for people in their area
= plan and commission care for local populations
commission local health services from different organisations
- rehabilitative care
- mental health and learning disability services
- general practitioners
- ambulance providers, urgent and emergency care
All GP practices belong to a CCG
What is the function of NHS Improvement?
improve the quality of service
- ensure consistently safe, high quality, compassionate care is given
oversees NHS trusts and manages budget
- makes sure CCGs are operating at optimum

What is the function of Public Health England?
supports public health
works with local government and NHS to respond to emergencies
coordinates national public health service

set up locally by local authorities to act as a forum for commissioners across the NHS

What is the function of Care Quality Commission (CQC)?
regulates all health and adult social care services in England
- pharmacies are the exception
inspects quality of care provided
protects interest of those detained under the Mental Health Act
- makes sure that essential standards of quality and safety are being met where care is provided, from hospitals to private care homes.
What is the function of Healthwatch England?
set up locally
independent consumer champion
gathers and represents the view of the public about health and social care services in England
- operates at both national and local level
- ensures the view of the public and people who use the services are taken into account
- work as part of CQC
gives communities and patients a voice in decisions that affect them
What is the function of Local NHS England and Training Boards?
LETBs - 4 regions
= are statutory committees of Health Education England

responsible for educating and training doctors, pharmacist and pre-registrations, dentists, all health care professionals

What is the function of NICE?
National Institute of Health and Care Excellence
