What are the side effects of dermatophytes feeding on keratin?

A

colonisation by products such as keratinise

elicits a mild to severe host response = inflammation and erythema (redness), itching

What are the symptoms of tinea (ringworm)?

capitis
corporis
cruris

A

itchy, red, raised, scaly patches that may blister and ooze

sharply defined edges

redder around the outside with normal skin tone in the centre - appearance of a ring

multiple rings may be present

scan or beard infection may result in bald patches

nail infection (onchomycosis) may result in discoloured, thick nails or the nails may crumble
