What is the process of dispensing medicinal products/prescriptions?
prescription handling assessing the prescription problem solving interventions assembly and labelling accuracy checking transfer to patient
What should be done when you first receive the prescription?
- receiving from the patient/customer
check the patient details
- name, address, DOB
ensure the patient or representative has signed the reverse of the form
- only for NHS prescriptions

What are the steps in a legal check of the prescription?
signed in indelible ink - by the prescriber name and address of the patient patient date of birth - if under 12 years old date of prescribing - must be within 6 months of dispensing name and address of prescriber
What are the steps in a clinical check?
check if the products can be prescribed on a NHS prescription
check whether the prescription includes the
- appropriate dosage form, route of administration and strength for each product
check whether the dosage is in the correct therapeutic range
- age, weight, height, pregnancy
What are the procedures for intervention and problem solving?
contact the prescriber or healthcare professional
talk directly with the patient and/or representative
interventions should be recorded
What are the procedures for packing the medicine?
the medicine or product should match the prescription and be in date
it should be assembled using the correct equipment and processes
it should labelled and packaged appropriately
records should be made
What is the accuracy checking procedure?
the finished prescription should be checked against the prescription and the stock container (if used)
- product name, quantity, strength, expiry date
- patient details, directions, warning labels, professional appearance
the check should be made by someone other than the person who has dispensed the product
check should be done in a designated area
What is the procedure for transferring the product to the patient?
check the prescription has been received by the correct person
- name and address confirmed
appropriate information must be given to the patient or representative
- counselling, warning labels
measure spoon or oral syringe where appropriate
What is the process for electronic prescriptions?
prescriber submits the prescription onto EPS (electronic prescription service)
token to scan or name given and found on the spine
- patient might have their token
must have their NHS number to find the prescription easier on EPS
- confirm what has been diagnosed
claim for NHS exemption submitted
- must take a note of the exemption
What is the Summary Care Record (SCR)?
all the medical information on the patient
is kept up to date by the prescriber
- not available to the pharmacist or the patient
