What is the definition of Continued Professional Development?
it is the means by which members of professional associations maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required in their professional lives
What is the pharmacist’s responsibility?
pharmacist have a responsibility to keep their professional skills, knowledge and competency up to date.
What are the different sections of the CPD cycle?
RPAE reflection - recognises what area of your practice you will improve planning - plan how to improve the selected area action - engage in improving that area by activities evaluate - evaluate the improvement
What are the different starting points within the CPD? What is the difference between them?
reflection
- is a planned CPD = plan what is being learnt, how are members going to learn it, how long has the service benefitted the service users
action
- is an unplanned CPD
- an unplanned activity or event enabled new learning or refreshing of skills and knowledge
What makes how a person undertakes a CPD specific to them?
it is specific to the person
- time available
- resources available
- your preferred earning style
What are the disadvantages of an CPD?
depends on the ability of an individual to recognise in themselves and their practice areas that need to be improved
pharmacist working alone may not have the opportunity to test themselves against a peer
some pharmacists won’t/may not recognise the need improve unless sparked by an insult
some pharmacist may recognise the CPD can be about all aspects of practice not just the clinical aspects/knowledge
What are examples of non-clinical skills that can be part of a CPD for pharmacy professionals?
people management skills IT skills time management teaching skills writing skills.
What is revalidation?
revalidation is a process which will help pharmacy professionals to keep their professional knowledge and skills up-to-date, and show that they remain fit to practise in their area.
What is the aim of revalidation?
it aims at ensuring safe and effective provision of patient care and provide reassurance to patients and public of a pharmacist skills and knowledge
What are the stages to be completed in GPhC Revalidation? How often must it be submitted? What is the result?
1st year: submit 4 CPD records, at least 2 planned cycles
2nd year: 4 CPD records, a peer discussion and a reflective account
must be submitted every year by a pharmacist when renewing their registration
The GPhC will review a sample of records and provide feedback
- pass or fail
What is a peer discussion? What is the purpose of a peer discussion?
a peer discussion is a learning and development activity that encourages engagement with others in the process of reflection on learning and practice
purpose is to reduce professional isolation and encourage reflection drawing on third party perspectives
is not a peer review.
Who can be the peer in a peer discussion? What are examples of a peer for peer discussion?
peer should be someone who understands aspects of the work you do and someone that you respect and can trust
- pharmacist, line manager, nurse
What is included in a peer discussion record?
GPhC does not require a record of what was discussed, but requires an account of reflection on the benefits of the discussion to your service users.
