What is the function of cerumen?
protects the tympanic membrane by trapping foreign particles
How is cerumen formed?
formed from secretions of sebaceous and apocrine glands
sebaceous - sweat glands = produce sebum
apocrine - ceruminous glands located in the external auditory canal
How does cerumen/ear wax migrate out of the ear?
ear wax is expelled due to the migration of epithelial cells to ear canal entrance
process is facilitated by normal mouth movement - chewing, talking
Who is most affected by excess cerumen?
epidemiology
everyone
- elderly people
- people with hearing aids
- people who use cotton buds
What causes otitis externa?
aetiology
repeated contact with water flushes out wax - causes itches
excess water creates a moist environment for bacterial growth
infection of the outer ear
What is the Eustachian tube?
tube that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx
normally closed
opens to equalise pressure between either side of the tympanic membrane - prevent damage to the ear
What is the difference between the Eustachian tube in adults and children?
children
- shorter, more horizontal
adult
- longer, more arched
