role of education- feminist view Flashcards
how does education maintain and produce patriarchy?
Heaton and Lawson- subject choice
-school curriculum
-gendered language and stereotypes
Stanworth- teaches attitudes/ behavior towards students.
how does subject choice maintain and reproduce patriarchy?
practical subjects such as STEM subjects and aimed and boys and Essay based subjects are aimed at females due to gender roles created through childhood e.g bedroom culture for girls
why are feminists concerned about subject choice and how it is maintaining and reproducing patriarchy?
concerned as these subject choices link directly to future careers, STEM subjects get payed more than careers linked to essay based subjects which are linked to hospitality and care, this then creates a gender inequality from the pay imbalance which also creates a power imbalance.
how does gendered language maintain and reproduce patriarchy?
Gendered language in children’s books teaches children gender roles and what to expect and reinforces how boys are promoted to be leaders and to have choice, however females are promoted the domestic lifestyle and to be followers.
why are feminists concerned about gendered language and how it is maintaining and reproducing patriarchy?
they are concerned as this teaches young boys tat they have the power over women and can make their wives submissive due to this stereotyped power imbalance which maintains patriarchy as the cycle of this stereotype doesn’t end.
how does curriculum maintain and reproduce patriarchy?
The curriculum students learn is dominated by male experiences and achievement, for example this is shown through the specification predominately teaching male writers
Why are feminists concerned with how the curriculum maintains and reproduces patriarchy?
They are concerned as this shows children through literature and history that male achievements and experiences are more valued in society and therefore men should be more status- however is this deliberate or is it an accurate reflection on how our history is male dominated?
How does teachers attitudes and behaviour towards students maintain and reinforce patriarchy?
Teacher’s attitudes towards students future careers showed how they always pushed males to aspire for the top jobs such as the manager and reinforced how women will always only ever be the assistant to the top jobs.
Why are feminists concerned about teachers attitudes and behaviour towards students and how this maintains and reinforces patriarchy
Feminists say that this is the glass ceiling which separates males and females within the working jobs environment- this keeps girls expectations low and carry’s on girls low aspiration to go for the top jobs, this therefore allows men to achieve the top jobs without competition
What is the evaluation for the glass ceiling explanation of how teachers attitudes and behaviour towards students maintains and reinforces patriarchy
However this has changed more in the 21st century as there are more equal opportunities in education showing how the glass ceiling is cracking.
