Q

How do language codes create cultural deprivation for the w/c

A

The working class have to learn the elaborated code as this is not something they are familiar with however the specification is written in the elaborated code. This makes it harder for the w/c to achieve the same grades as the m/c as they have an advantage as they are already familiar with the language codes.

Q

How do parents attitudes create cultural deprivation for the w/c

A

Douglas says how w/c parents who place less value on education show less encouragement towards their children having high aspirations within education so these children put less effort into school, and don’t see university as an option in the future as their parents did not go.

Q

how do parents attitudes create cultural capital for the m/c

A

parents have a positive outlook on education due to a positive experience of their own therefore they push their children to their full potential due to them placing value on education, and encourage their children to attend university

Q

how does wider subculture create cultural deprivation

A

Sugarman stated that the 4 factors which created a barrier against achievement.
fatalism- have the belief that ‘what will be will be’
collectivism- valued being part of a community rather than being an individual
immediate gratification- seek reward now rather than later
present time orientation- seeing the present as more important than the future

these all create a antischool subculture which leads to lack of motiation for homework and revision
