Boys- choose subjects like computing, engineering, math and physics at Alevel/GCSE
Girls- choose subjects like art + design, biology, english literature and drama at Alevel/GCSE
what are the external factors which affect subject choice
Gender role sociallisation-Norman
Gendered careeer opportunities
‘Gender domains’- Brown + Ross
what are the internal factors affecting subject choice?
gender of teacher
Style of teaching
Peer pressure- Paechter
how does gender role socialisation affect subject choice?
Norman- early age children dressed differently depending on their gender, played with different toys. Clear separateness of the genders in what they can and can’t do
how does gendered career opportunities affect subject choice
jobs are typed by the gender of being ‘female’ or ‘male’. jobs for ‘females’ mimic housewife jobs such as childcare worker due their nurturing nature. This provides children with the idea that jobs in childcare are only suited for females serrating what each gender can and can’t do.
how does ‘gender domains’ affect subject choice?
Brown + Ross- children are more comfortable/confident with tasks which fit their gender domain and therefore are more drawn to them.
how does gender of the teacher affect subject choice?
students more likely to identify with role models of the same sex so put more effort into the subjects their teacher teaches
how does the style of teaching affect subject choice
Different subjects are taught in different ways with different techniques such as individual or paired work, students more likely to pay attention and put effort into the subject which has their preferred learning style.
how does peer pressure affect subject choice?
Paechter- Sports are male dominated, this makes females who take part in sports are placed by their peers with the image which contradicts the female stereotype so females opt of not taking part in these sports so they do not get placed with this image.
what is the evaluation point for subject choice?
single sex schools- Leonard
How do single sex schools not follow the pattern subject choice?
Pupils who attend hold less stereotyped subject images and tend to go against these trends of gendered subject choice
Leonard- opposite trend in single sex schools which is the same in further +higher education.
