factors which affects a child’s ability to achieve within the education environment.

Becker- teachers judged students based on how close they where to the ‘ideal pupil’
m/c where closest to this and w/c where the furthest away.
how does labeling advantage the m/c
Becker- teachers judged how close they was to the ideal pupil m/c are most like this so they gain additional help within the classroom.
how does streaming disadvantage the w/c
Gillborn and Youdell- using stereotypes to set pupils as having certain abilities. The w/c were stereotyped as having low abilities which caused them to be placed a lower sets which lead them to achieving low GCSEs due to the lower sets being denied the information to achieve the high grades.
how does streaming advantage the m/c
Gillborn and Youdell- using stereotypes to set pupils as having certain abilities . The m/c were stereotyped as having high abilities which caused them to be placed in higher sets which were the sets which was taught the content to achieve the higher GCSE grades.
how does pupil subculture advantage the m/c
Ball- even though streaming was abolished differentiation still continued by teaches through catorgising differently however this continued to give the m/c an advantage.
how does pupil subculture disadvantage the w/c
Lacey- subcultures developed through differentiation which caused polarisation to happen which created both anti and pro school subcultures from students moving to the opposite sides of the spectrum based off which set they was placed into.
