Role of decomposers Flashcards
1
Q
How do bacteria and fungi break down dead organic matter?
A
By secreting enzymes onto it to digest it extracellularly and then absorb the nutrients. Process helps recycle nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen.
2
Q
How do saprophytic bacteria and fungi work?
A
Secrete enzymes into the soil or dead organism. The enzymes break down the organic material which is then absorbed by the bacteria or fungi.
3
Q
What is humus?
A
The organic content of the soil formed from decomposing plant and animal material.
