Blood components+Cell Lysis Flashcards
Two major functions of the circulatory system.
- Transports absorbed food molecules (in the blood)
- Defends against disease
Three main components of the circulatory system.
Blood
Blood vessels
Heart
Why do RBC have no nucleus?
Allows more room for oxygen to be transported
What is Biconcave shape?
Shape like a nut
Why is iron required in a diet?
To make haemoglobin
What is the job of the RBC?
Carry oxygen from lungs to tissues/cells of the body.
Phagocytes
-Lobed nucleus, fewer in number to RBC, larger
- Engulf and digest microbes
Lymphocytes
- Round nucleus, fewer in number to RBC, larger
- Produce antibodies to respond to foreign cells/microbes
Platelets
- Cell fragments
- Converts fibrinogen (soluble protein) to fibrin (insoluble) which traps RBC and makes them clot and form a scab over the wound
Plasma
Fluid containing water, minerals, protein (fibrin), waste products, dissolved food and hormones
Transports cells, heat and dissolved molecules
Cell Lysis
When the animal cell is placed in water it swells and bursts. Salts and other chemicals in blood plasma keep the concentration similar to the RBC, preventing the cells bursting.
