Q

What’s compensation point?

A

The balance between respiration and photosynthesis. Respiration is made through oxygen and respiration breaks down glucose to make energy. Respiration is the only gas exchange that can occur at night. When there’s a low rate of light intensity, usually at night, photosynthesis isn’t occurring which means the rate of respiration and photosynthesis are equal- there’ll be no net gas exchange.

Q

What does the hydrogen carbonate indicator going from red-yellow mean?

A
  • Yellow=high levels of CO2
  • High levels of CO2 show the rate of respiration is higher than the rate of photosynthesis

Q

What does the hydrogen carbonate indictor going from red-red mean?

A
  • CO2 concentration stays the same
  • No net movement of CO2. Rate of photosynthesis and respiration are the same. (Compensation point)

Q

What does the hydrogen carbonate indictor going from red-purple?

A
  • Shows there are low levels of CO2
  • Lower CO2 (red-purple) shows rate of photosynthesis is higher than rate of respiration.
