1:6:6 Hormones Flashcards
Explain hormones roles in homeostasis.
Hormones are chemical messages that are produced by glands that release them into the blood that then travel to a target organ. They’re slower than nervous responses.
What is insulin?
A hormone that prevents blood sugar levels from becoming too high. Glucose is needed in the blood for respiration to make energy, however too much damages cells.
How does the body monitor glucose levels?
Glucose levels are monitored by the pancreas.
Insulin is produced in the pancreas when the blood glucose level is too high.
Target organ is the liver, travels there by the blood.
The liver converts excess glucose into glycogen
Increases absorption of glucose from the blood and increases respiration, using up more glucose.
What happens to the blood glucose levels when they’re too high?
When you eat a meal, your blood glucose quickly rises and then falls back to normal levels.
