Role Of A Synogogue Flashcards
synagogue as a place of study
Many Jews will use the synagogue as a place to study: young = attend lessons where they will learn the basic religious teachings of their faith
Older = study Torah throughout their lives and most synagogues will have a library full of the Jewish sacred texts for their followers to study
A place for celebration
ITs also used as a place for various Jewish rites of passage and celebrations to take place
Bar mitzvah and Jewish wedding and funeral ceremonies will all take place here.
“go forth and multiply”
A place of community
The synagogue is also a place for social gatherings and activities
An important tole is its function as a social welfare agency, collecting money and dispensing money and other items for the aid of the poor and needy.
“God made mankind in his image” - everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect
Some reasons as to why people may think that the synagogues aren’t important today in Britain
- People can pray anywhere
- Decreasing number of Jews to worship at synagogue
- Some prayers requires a minyan (10 people)
- Too big and expensive for the number of worshippers
- Difficulties in getting a rabbi
