Rocks and Minerals Flash Cards
How does an igneous rock form (definition)?
Made from cooled magma or lava.
How does a sedimentary rock form(definition)?
Made from layers of sediment that has been compacted and cemented together.
How does a metamorphic rock form(definition)?
Formed when existing igneous or sedimentary rocks come under extreme heat and/or pressure (squeezing).
What are some key facts about igneous rocks?
*Means βfrom fireβ
*The texture depends on how fast the rock coolsβ¦
-Quickly: smooth
-Slowly: bumpy or rough
*Very hard and can have crystals.
EXAMPLES:
Basalt and granite
What are some key facts about sedimentary rocks?
TYPES OF SEDIMENT:
Sand, shells, pebbles, bits of rock, minerals, organic matter (from living things), and fossils.
*They are soft and crumbly, made of layers.
*No heat, just pressure.
*Pressure preserves fossils.
EXAMPLES:
Sandstone, limestone, and shale.
What are some key facts about metamorphic rocks?
*Foliate- bands or zones of same material.
*Non-Foliated- no visible bands or zones.
EXAMPLES:
Marble and slate.
Draw the rock cycle.
Check worksheet.
What are the seven properties of minerals?
Hardness, streak, luster, color, density, shape, special properties.
What are the five parts of a mineral definition?
Natural occurring- must be found on Earth; not man made.
Inorganic- not be from materials that were once part of living things.
Solid- have a definite shape and volume.
Definite chemical composition- always have the same elements in the same proportions.
Crystal structure- have a unique, repeating pattern.
What are the three rock types?
Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
