Respiratory Anatomy Flashcards
Point of division between upper and lower respitory
Larynx
Functions of Respiratory Tract
Conduction of air (warming, filtering and humidifying air) and external respiration (gas exchange)
Upper Respiratory System Components
Nasal Cavity, Pharynx and Larynx
Nasal cavity functions and components
Takes air into body from atmosphere. Vestibule (air entry point), conchae (boney structure (supports shape + increases surface area (faster heating)) and sinuses (vaities, heat air)
Pharynx Function and Components
Pathway for air. Nasopharynx, oropharynx and laryngopharynx
Larynx Functions
Sphincter (prevents food going down wrong way) and phonation
Trachea Spacing
Begins at cricoid cartilage (C6) travels down body’s midline, divides at T4 (sternal angle, border with mediastinum) into right and left bronchi (left bigger then right). Palpate at suprasternal notch (T2, trachea bends out over ribs)
Sign of bronchial cancer
Division between right and left bronchi isn’t clear
Thorax Compoenets
Musculoskeletal wall, 12 thoracic vertebrae, ribs, costal cartilage and sternum
Thorax Functions
Respiration (breathing) and protection
Thoracic Vertebrae Bodies Outline
Heart shaped. Facets for head of ribs
Vertebral Canal
Protects and supports spinal chord, round
