respiratory Flashcards
obstuctive airway disease features
- characterised by airflow obstruction or limitation
- casues mroe difficulty during expiration
- unifying sympton: increased work of breathing
-common in NZ
obstructive airway diseases include:
asthma
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- chronic brocnhitis
- emphysema
cyctic fibrosis
bronchiectasis
asthma features
- chronic inflammatory condion
- episodic and usually reversable
- airway hyperresponsivmness: narroeing of airways
- pulmonary inflammation
- airway remodelling
causes of asthma
likey genetic aswell as environmental
- risk factors- family rhistory, allergen exposure, exposure to air pollutants, recurrent viral infection
- hygiene hypothesis
- decreased exercise
asthma pathophysiology
airway responsiveness
chronic inflammation of airways
mucous hypersecretion
asthma leads to:
airway obstruction
hypoxemia and hypoxia
air retention and hyper capnia
cystic fibrosis
inherited disorder
defective CFTR protein- casues mucus to not be liquid so mucous is more sticky
- affects lungs and pancreas in particualr
- chronic cough, SOB, repeated chest infections
where does cystic fibrosis particularly affect
lungs and pancreas
what does sticky thick mucous mean for lungs
reduces airflow on broncioles, can plug small airways
