cardio: atherosclerosis Flashcards
atherosclerosis causes
coronary heart disease
atherosclerosis info
- leading casue of deaaht by occlusion causing ischemia of heart or brain
- starts in adolescene
- affects artry walls
atherosclerosis happens form
Fatty plaques forming in walls of large/medium sized arteries
Plaques are composed of subsatnces like:
- Cholestoral
- Smooth muscle cells
atherosclerosis pathogenesis
accumulation of cholesterol and “foam cells” as well as formation of fiborous scar tissue beneath the intimal layer
smooth muscles allso migrate form underlying media into the growing plaque
the growing plaque reduces blood vessel diameter
atherosclerosis risk factors
- hypercholesterolaemia
- men >45, women> 55
- family history
- cigarette smoking
- hypertension
- diabetes mellitus
- obesity
- inactivity
atherosclerosis consequences
bood flow reduced to tissues supplied by affected arteries causing:
- peripheral arterial disease: intermittent claudication
- acute arterial occlusion
-aneurysm
- thrombosis
