dental lecture Flashcards
how many nz chilren develop dental caries
45%
why are children more susceptable to caries
primary dentition is thinner so more susceptable
caries are:
the progressive errosion of dental tissue
developmental factors for caries
bacteria
substrates
susceptibility
caries: bacteria-
live in plaque
caries: substrates
things that might be in oral cavity, eg increased sugars, decreased O2, sugar feeds the bacteria and they grow
caries: susceptability means
eg between teeth, pits(grooves in teeth surface), decreased flouride, decreased saliva, poor oral hygiene
stages of caries:
- enamal leisoins
- enamal decay
- dentin decay
- pulp involvement
- abscess
stage 1 of caries
enamel decay
little bit of demineralisation in the enamal, appears as chalky wite spots, remineralisation can occur
stage 2 of caries
enamel decay
errosion or loss of enamel, decolouration of the teeth
stage 3 of caries
dentin decay
break down of dentin, call this habitation of the tooth, erroding a hole into secind layer of tissue
stage 4 of caries
pulp involvement
damage of blood vessels and nerves, pain progresses here
stage 5 of caries
abscess
develops at base of root of tooth, fluid filled space, increases risk if infection spreading beyond the oral cavity
list 5 stages of oral caries
enamal leisons
enamel decay
dentin decay
pulp involvment
abscess
prevention or oral caries
prevention is key - good oral hygiene, avoid excess dietary sugar
