Research Methods - Inferential Statistics Flashcards
To learn about skewed data using mean, median and mode and probability
What is a curve of normal distribution?
A symmetrical, bell-shaped curve which shows most scores are around the midpoint. Fewer scorch are shown as the behavior becomes more or less than the midpoint
What is a ‘true’ normal curve?
When all measures of central tendency occur at the highest point in the curve
What is a negative skew also known as?
Skew to the left where the mean is less than the mode
What is a positive skew also known as?
Skew to the right where the mean is higher than the mode
What is the skew represented as on a graph?
The sudden dip or rise
What is probability?
the likelihood of something happening
Give 2 ways to express probability:
- coin, 50% chance of heads, 50% chance of tails
2. dice, 1 in 6 chance of any number showing
What is level of significance?
The level at which psychologists will reject the null hypothesis
What is the usual level of significance?
95%
What does 95% level of significance infer?
Tells us that there is a 95% probability of the IV affecting the DV and 5% likelihood of it being due to chance
How would a psychologist represent the probability of the results being less than 5% due to chance?
p> 0.05
What does p stand for in p>0.06
p = the probability of the results being due to chance
