Research Methods - Correlations Flashcards
What are correlations?
A statistical technique which shows the relationship between two variables
What is a positive correlation?
When one variable increases, so does the other variable
What is a negative correlation?
When one variable increases, the other variable decreases
What is the main strength of using correlations?
It allows us t measure the relationship between two variables which would be difficult or unethical to manipulate experimentally
What is a common use of correlations in psychology?
To test for reliability or validity
What is inter-observer reliability?
When the data gathered by one observer is the same as data gathered by another observer
What is concurrent validity?
If the data in one test is related to the data in other test
What is the main weakness of correlations?
The do not establish the cause of the relationship between the two varibales
