Research Methods - Hypothesis Flashcards
Learn all types of hypothesis, how to conduct them and their uses
What is a hypothesis?
A prediction based on observation or theory
What are the two types of hypothesis?
- null hypothesis
2. alternate hypothesis
What does an alternate hypothesis state?
That there is a relationship between the two variables, whether positive or negative - results are not due to chance and are significant in supporting the theory
What does the null hypothesis state?
That there is no relationship between the two variables - results are due to chance and are not significant in supporting the theory
What is a two-tailed hypothesis?
A hypothesis that predicts that results could go either of two ways
What are two-tailed hypotheses also known as?
Non-directional hypotheses
Give an example of a two-tailed hypothesis:
there will be a difference in how many numbers are correctly recalled by children and adults.
What is a one-tailed hypothesis?
A hypothesis that predicts that results will go in one direction
What are one-tailed hypotheses also known as?
Directional hypotheses
Give an example of a one-tailed hypothesis:
adults will correctly recall more words than children
What are the 4 points to consider when writing a hypothesis?
- Identify key variables (IV, DV)
- Operationalise variables
- Direction - one-tailed or two-tailed
- Concise and clear
