Research Methods- Experimental Design Flashcards
What is an independent groups design?
There are different participants in each condition
What is an advantage of an independent groups design?
No order effects
What are two disadvantages of an independent groups design?
Participant variables may affect the results and a large number of participants are needed
What is a repeated measures design?
Participants participate in both conditions
What are two advantages of a repeated measures design?
Participant variables shouldn’t affect results and fewer participants are needed
What is a disadvantage of a repeated measures design?
Order effects
What is a matched pairs design?
There are different participants in each condition matched on important characteristics
What are two advantages of a matched pairs design?
There are no order effects and participant variables are minimised
What are two disadvantages of a matched pairs design?
Need a large number of participants and not practical
What are control groups?
A group that has not experienced any of the manipulations of the IV which allows a direct comparison
Why does research need to be highly controlled?
To avoid the effects of extraneous variables
How can extraneous variables be controlled?
So that they’re kept constant for all participants
What is counterbalancing?
Mixing up the order of the tasks
What is the effect of counterbalancing?
To keep any order effects equal across conditions
What is the effect of random allocation?
Means everyone has an equal chance of doing either condition
