Research Methods- Correlations and Distributions Flashcards
What is correlation?
A measure of the relationship between two variables
What is a correlation coefficient?
A number between +1 and -1
What does a correlation coefficient show?
How closely variables are linked and the type of correlation
What is a positive correlation?
As one variable rises, so does the other
What is a negative correlation?
As one variable rises, the other one falls
What is a zero correlation?
Two variable aren’t linked
What are 3 advantages of correlational research?
- Doesn’t involve controlling any variables so can do it without a controlled experiment
- Good for future research
- Can be used to test for reliability and validity
What are 2 disadvantages of correlational research?
- Can’t establish cause-and-effect relationships
- Have to use a significance test
What is a normal distribution?
Symmetrical about the mean
What is a positive skew?
Data is clustered around the lower end of the data set
What is a negative skew?
Data is clustered around the higher end of the data set
