The particular behaviours expected of men and women- vary over time and between cultures
What are sex-role stereotypes?
Ideas about sex roles that are widely held but tend to be narrow, inflexible and over generalised
What was the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI)?
A self-report questionnaire developed by Bem by asking 50 males and 50 females to rate personality traits as either masculine or feminine
What traits were used in the BSRI?
Traits that were most highly rated masculine, feminine or neutral
What was the aim of the BSRI?
To measure the mix of stereotypically masculine and feminine traits present in an individual
Why does Bem suggest that being androgynous is advantageous in society?
As it means people have the traits needed to cope with a range of situations
