Reproduction Flashcards
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction
Can reproduce in isolation, creates offspring quickly, no expenditure of energy to maintain reproductive systems
What are the types of asexual reproduction
Fission- separation of a organism into 2 new cells
Budding- breaking off the original cells
Fragmentation- break down and regeneration of the cells
Parthenogenesis- development of the egg without fertilization
What is the function of the testes, vas deferns, prostate gland, uthera, scrotum
Testes- site of sperm production
Vas deferns- carries sperm during ejaculation from the epididymis to the penis
Prostate gland- secrets semen into the urethra
Urethra- tube that carries semen and urine
Scrotum- sac that carries the testes
What is the function of the ovary, fallopian tube, uterus, vagina, cervix, endometrium
Ovary- where meiosis occurs
Fallopian tube- where fertilization occurs
Uterus- where the embryo will develop
Vagina- birth canal
Cervix- mouth of the uterus
Endometrium- lining of the uterus
Describe the follicular phase, ovulation, luteal phase, and mensturation
Follicular phase- increased amount of estrogen is produces in response to FSH
Ovulation- secondary oocyte ruptures because of LH
Luteal phase- estrogen and progesterone thicken the endometrium
Menstruation- buildup of the lining of the uterus breaks, tissue and blood are discharged from the vagina
Spermatogenesis
Is the process of sperm production, LH induces the testes to produce testosterone. FSH and testosterone stimulate sperm production
Oogenesis
The production of the ova
What is the process of embryonic development
1-zygote
2-cleavage: rapid Mitotic division, the end is called blastula, individual cells are called blastomeres the fluid inside is called blastocoel
3-gastrulation: differentiation: the rearrangement of the blastula into 3 germ layers called gastrula
4-Organogenesis: cells continue to differentiate producing organs
5-fetus
Extraembryonic membranes of the bird embryo
Chorion- allows for diffusion of respiratory gases
Yolk sac- enclosed the yolk
Amnion- enclosed the embryo
Allantois- place where nitrogenous waste accumulates until hatching
