Classical Genetics Flashcards
Describe the law of Dominance
States when 2 organisms are crossed, homozygous for 2 opposing traits the offspring will be heterozygous but only show the dominant trait
Describe the law of segregation
States that during the formation of gametes, the two traits carried by the parent separates
What is a test-cross
Used to determine whether a an individual plant or animal showing the dominant trait is TT or Tt
Describe the law of independent assortment
When a cross is carried out between 2 individuals that have are hybrid for 2 set of traits, each trait will be inherited individually
What is incomplete dominance
When both of the traits are mixed and expressed
What is codominance
When both traits are expressed together but independently
What are polygenic traits
Characteristics that are controlled by several genes
Give 2 examples of sexlinked recessive traits
Color blindness and hemophilia
What is a karyotype
Is a procedure that analyzes number of chromosomes
What is the difference between gene mutations and chromosome mutation
Gene- caused by change in DNA sequence
Chromosome- abnormal number of chromosomes
