Relationships Between Organisms Flashcards
Predation
One thing eats another; +, x=one good, one dead
Defenses against predation
Cryptic coloration (camouflage), warning coloration (I’m poisonous!)
Competition
Two things fighting for resources, mates, etc. >,< May or may not be bad or good for organisms. May be interspecies, but not always.
Symbiosis
Organisms living together in close association.
What are the three types of symbiosis?
Parasitism, mutualism, commensalism.
Parasitism
Host and parasite, +, - =Good for parasite, not host.
Ex. of parasites?
Mosquito, flatworms, nematodes, mistletoe
Commensalism
One partner benefits without significantly affecting the other. +,< = One good, one neutral. Can quickly become parasitism.
Is commensalism common?
No, it is rare. There are few examples of this in nature because organisms are almost always affected in a relationship.
An example of commensalism?
Moths drinking cow tears, cattle egret living on oxen, clownfish living in anemone, barnacles living on a whale.
Mutualism
Both benefit: +,+ =Both good. Many examples in nature of mutualism.
Example of mutualism?
Oxpecker and rhino, ants and acacia.
