What were Residential Schools?
Boarding schools where First Nations children were gathered to live, work and study that were operated by the Canadian Government and the Catholic Church
What were some negative aspects to Residential Schools?
Excessive punishment
Staff who were sexual predators
What was the Enfranchisement that the British offered Indigenous people?
A voluntary relinquishment of Indian status
Why was Enfranchisement criticized?
Because it was unfair how Indian women lost their status when marrying a non indigenous person but the opposite did not happen
What does the Indian Act do?
An act that define who is and is not a status Indian and eligible to receive specific benefits
What was the White Paper?
Trudeau’s government issue papered that planned to abolish treaties, the department of indian affairs, and everything else that had kept the First Nations distinct from the rest of the people in Canada
Why did Trudeau create the White paper?
Because he felt their unique status was preventing them from indication into Canadian society
What went wrong with the White Paper?
The Trudeau government failed to consult with FN and Inuit people
What was the Red Paper?
Aboriginal peoples response to the Red paper which outlined their objections to the white paper
What was said in the Royal Commission on Aboriginal peoples?
- Legislation should recognize sovereignty of indigenous people
- Institutions should be created for aboriginal self government
- Initiatives need to address social, education, health and housing needs
What was the Aboriginal Healing Fund?
A corporation that goal is to heal people from the legacy of Physical and Sexual abuse
How do Liberal countries promote Rights?
They ensure citizens are protected under the constitution and have fundamental freedom
They also ensure that legislation cannot be easily be overturned while still allowing a measure of flexibility
