What was the purpose of the meeting at Yalta?
To redraw the map of Europe since WW2 was ending
What was the agreement about Germany in Yalta?
In order to stop Nazi Germany, it was decided that it be divided into 4. It will also be demilitarized and denazificationed
What was decided about the citizens of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia at Yalta?
They were to be handed over to their respective countries regardless of consent
How did Roosevelt get Stalin to commit to joining the UN?
He told them each of the five participants would have a veto power on any ruling

Soviets wanted reparations and a weakened Germany
What did the Allies want for Germany post war?
They wanted a renewed western European economy that depended upon a unified Germany

US aid offered to all European countries that had strings attached related to economic policies

To install communism in all states liberated from Nazi Germany

Hungarians revolted, this was short lived as it was crushed by the soviet army
Why was it a cold war and not a hot war?
Because there was lack of common enemy to fight so it was replaced with ideological conflict

Stronger than before when they entered it with many resources like a military and economic and political influence

Decide on postwar peace

The USA and British militaries were allowed to administer to the western sphere of influence
The soviet Union was allowed to administer the eastern sphere of influence

What is Expansionism?
An attempt to enlarge territorial and ideological influence beyond a country’s borders and allies
What are spheres of influence?
Territories and countries which a powerful country dominates
Who fell under the American Sphere of influence?
The countries that western allies had liberated from Nazi Germany
What was the Truman Doctrine?
Because of the fear of communism, the USA was prepared to intervene throughout the world to protect democracy.
How did the USA practice containment?
By lending equipment, advice, and a military force
What is containment?
The attempt to thwart another country’s expansionism through means other than direct warfare
