Reducing and non reducing sugars Flashcards
1
Q
What do reducing sugars act as
A
Reducing agents- they donate electrons to other molecules, carry put reduction and become oxidised in the process
2
Q
What groups do reducing sugars have and what do they look like/involve
A
Aldehyde group- h-c–o, due to H are very easily oxidised
Ketone group- c–o
3
Q
What type of structure are reducing suagrs
A
All monosaccharides, some disaccharides e.g maltose, galactose
4
Q
Example of non reducing sugars
A
Only common one is sucrose as it has a glyosidic bond between glucose and fructose, so no aldehyde groups (not able to give electrons)
