RED’s
-low energy availability (LEA) resulting in impaired physiological functioning
LEA
-inadequate energy to support functions required to maintain optimal health and performance
At risk populations for LEA
-teens, young women
-endurance athletes (lean physique)
-female, pathologic weight-control behaviors
Eating continuum
-healthy dieting
-restrictive eating
-abnormal eating behavior
-clinical eating disorder
Anorexia nervosa
-obsessive desire to lose weight
-refusal to eat
-distorted body image
-extreme fear of weight gain
bulimia nervosa
-repeated episodes of eating large amounts of food
-followed by extreme guilt
-get out: self induced vomiting, extreme exercise, fasting, laxative use
Binge eating
-consumption of large quantities
-followed by extreme guilt
eumenorrhea
-regular cycle (21-35 days)
primary amenorrhea
-absence of menstruation by 15
secondary amenorrhea
-absence of 3 or more consecutive cycles (similar to functional hypothalamic)
oligomenorrhea
-menstruation cycler greater than 35 days (45 in adolescents)
REDS and males: high risk sports
cycling, rowing, running, ski jumping, weight class sports
REDs symptoms
-reduced immunity, impaired reproductive function, impaired development and growth, mental health issues
