Common Injuries Flashcards
Epiphyseal growth plate
Vulnerable part of bone located at the end
Apophyseal growth plate
Vulnerable part of bone where tendons/ligaments attach
Apophysitis
Traction injury resulting from repetitive stress on these areas (causing irritation and inflammation)
Common types of apophysitis
- Severs disease (calcaneous) 8-14 y
- osgood-schlatter disease (tibial tuberosity) 10 -15y
- little league elbow (medial epicondyle) 8-15 y
Synovitis
Inflammation of the synovial membrane and synovial fluid collection
Chondropathy
Inflamed chondral cartilage (area just above/below patella)
Treatment of the joint/ligament injuries synovitis and chondropathy
Load modification, physiotherapy, NSAID’s
Fasciitis
Inflammation of fascia (plantar: overuse, improper footwear, biomechanics issues, higher risk after period of inactivity)
Chronic compartment syndrome
Repetitive impact and overloading, resulting in swelling and increased pressure of muscles caching, burning, tightness, numbness due to reduced blood flow and pain)
Bursitis
Inflammation of bursa (small sac btw tendon and bone) caused by overuse and repetitive movements
Prevention of overuse injury
Strength training for major muscle groups, exercise regularly, gradually increase training load, cross-training, sleep, correct form and technique, rest days, proper gear and equipment, nutrition
Degenerative disc disease (ddd)
Heavy stress to the spine, intervertebral disc wears down, resulting in pain, stiffness, reduced Rom, radiating pain to limbs, tingling
Avulsion fracture
Tendon/ligament pulls off a piece of bone from attachment point (most common ASIS an ischial tuberosity)
Most common movement for ankle sprains
Inversion / supination
Lateral ankle sprain
Affects anterior talofibular (ATF) ligament, posterior talotibular (ptf) ligament, calcaneofibular (CF) ligament, peroneal tendons
