Osteoarthritis Flashcards
Osteoarthritis
Degeneration of articular cartilage in synovial joints
Symptoms of OA
Popping, cracking, stiffness, loss of flexibility, pain, swelling, bone spurs
Main risk factors for OA
Aging and intra-articular joint injury
kellgren- Lawrence grading scale
X-ray to identify narrowing joint space
What is the best evidence based OA treatment?
Exercise therapy!
Glad
Neuromuscular exercises that focus on muscles controlling the joint (lower limb strength, core muscle strength, functional exercises, positional exercises)
Restrictions of total knee replacement
Ligaments gone (supportive, but mainly loss of proproception)
Treatment for OA
First line- exercise, education, weight loss
Second line- medication, physio, aids
Third line- surgery
PTOA is most often triggered by which injuries?
Acute ligament strain, ligament instability, ACL rupture, meniscus injury, fracture, cartilage damage
Roles of exercise in OA
Pain management, increase PA, reduce risk of comorbidities, improve strength, improve alignment and gait
