Symptoms and signs of arthritis
Joint pain, stiffness/reduced Rom, swelling, skin discoloration, tenderness, sensitivity around joint, feeling heat/warmth near joint
Signs of inflammatory
Stiffness in the morning, weightloss fevers, night sweats, joint patterns synonymous with RA or PsA, nodules, rashes, other organ involvement
Qualification for arthritis
articular (in the joint) where both active and passive Rom are painful
Components of non-inflammatory osteoarthritis
Localized pain, pain after inactivity, no other noticeable bodily issues
What role do cytokines play in IA
They are signalling proteins (RA spreads beyond joint cavity)
Goals of treatment
1) prevent/control joint damage
2) preserve/prevent loss of function
3) decrease pain/swelling
Physio
Once a day, within Rom, isometric, stop painful movements, gradually adjust training, avoid exercise in acute stage
Chronic (non-acute) phase exercise:
Light resistance, low impact cardiovascular training (swim/core/cycle), gentle stretches
3 pillars of Al exercise
Increase Rom, endurance/aerobic exercise, strengthening
