Radio Telephony (ATM) Flashcards
Where can the international rules for radio telephony be found?
ICAO annex 10: Aeronautical Communications, and document 9432: Manual of Radio Telephony.
How should frequencies be transmitted?
Always give 3 figures after the decimal point if the channels are spaced by 25KHz or 8.33KHz, UNLESS the second and third decimal numbers are zero, in which case just the first decimal figure is sufficient.
How should levels be reported or transmitted?
The word altitude should precede the level indication
The word feet shall follow the level indication
The term flight level shall precede any flight levels, not followed by “feet”
How are aircraft registrations formatted?
Nationality marks consist of a nationality mark, followed by 4 or 5 digits which are the aircraft’s registration. Many of them are intuitive, i.e. G is UK, OE is Austria, F is France. Some of them are silly, though: OO is Belgium.
In what 4 ways can callsigns be formatted?
Type A
The registration mark, sometimes preceded by the type/manufacturer of the aircraft, e.g. Cessna G-ABCD.
Type B
The R/T designator of the operating agency, followed by the last 4 digits of the registration marking, e.g. DLH-ABCD
Type C
The R/T designator of the operating agency, followed by the flight number, eg. DLH-123. Sometimes flight numbers are a mix of letters and numbers, to avoid confusion. “double” and “triple” can be substituted for saying letters/numbers over and over again.
Type D
Military aircraft just get 7 digits which can be basically anything.
Which messages or components of messages are considered safety-critical, and therefore must be read back?
Route clearances Clearances/instructions to land, take off, hold short of, cross, taxi or backtrack any runway Runway in use Altimeter settings SSR codes Newly assigned communication channels Level, heading and speed instructions Transition levels
What is the order of priority for R/T messages?
Distress messages Urgency messages Messages realted to direction-finding Flight safety messages Meteorological messages Flight regularity messages State telegrams
What is the definition of a clearance?
Permission granted by ATC for an aircraft to proceed under specified conditions.
What shall be included in a clearance?
Aircraft identification Clearance limit Permitted route Levels to be used Any further info/instructions required
What 4 stages of co-ordination are necessary for the transfer of control of an aircraft between one ATC unit and another?
Notification about the flight to relevant ATC units.
Co-ordination of conditions of transfer between the two controlling units.
Co-ordination, if necessary, and acceptance of conditions of transfer by accepting unit.
The transfer of control then takes place.
How long before aircraft control is transferred between ATC units should comms be transferred?
5 minutes, unless otherwise specified.
How should the impending (20 mins) arrival of an aircraft at a transfer point be communicated to the next unit?
Sending unit will say: Estimate (location) (callsign).
Receiving unit will reply with the aircraft type and designation, to confirm that you are talking about the same flight.
Sending unit then says: Squawking (code), estimated (point) (time) at (level).
If the receiving unit does not have the flight details/plan, the receiving unit will instead then say: No details.
Sending unit will then give aircraft type, true air speed and approved route, along with all of the otherwise-transferred information.
