Altimetry (Mixed subjects) Flashcards
What is a height?
A vertical distance, in feet, of a level, point or object, measured from a particular datum.
What is an elevation?
The distance between mean sea level at a location, and the highest point of the ground, or an object fixed to the ground.
What is an altitude?
A vertical distance, in feet, of a level, point or object, measured from mean sea level.
What is a flight level?
A surface of constant pressure, measured by its distance from the reference pressure of 1013.25hPa, and seperated from other flight levels by pressure intervals.
What is QFE?
It is the pressure at ground level in a given place - if you set your altimeter to this when you are on the ground, it will read 0.
What is QNH?
It is the calculated pressure at mean sea level at a given point. Levels of aircraft measured from here are altitudes, and levels of land or land-fixed objects measured from here are elevations.
What is a transition altitude?
The altitude at or below which an aircraft should be controlled with reference to altitude.
What is a transition level?
The lowest flight level above the transition altitude which leaves an acceptable space in between.
What is a transition layer?
The space between the transition altitude and the transition level.
What is QNE?
It is the pressure at ground level, based on the assumption that mean sea level is at 1013.25hPa.
