Radar Flashcards
When is the radar fully operational? what will happen when you first turn it on? Is a warm up period required?
1) Fully operational when first turned on and is radiating energy immediately.
2) Performs a 45 second self test when first turned on
3) Warm up period is not required.
Where are system fault/ malfunctions displayed? How often are quick self tests performed?
1) faults/ malfunctions only displayed on the NDs
2) Quick self tests are performed at the end of each radar antenna sweep.
What is the function of the WX MODE selection?
Displays precipitation returns
How are precipitation returns displayed when in the WX MODE?
Black - minimum/ no intensity
Green - low intensity
Amber - Moderate Intensity
Red - Higher intensity (saturation)
What is the function of the WX+T selection? The TURB selection?
1) WX+T Displays both precip and turbulence (Magenta represents turbulence) .
2) TURB - Displays only areas of Turbulence in Magenta.
What range must the ND be set to for Turbulence to be displayed?
40 miles or less
What is the function of the MAP selection.
Ground Mapping Mode
1) Black - water or radar shadows
2) Green - Ground Returns
3) Amber - Man made structures or high terrain.
What does the GAIN selector knob do? What if this knob is in the CAL position?
1) GAIN selector controls the radar energy beam strength.
2) CAL (Calibrated) - provides predetermined beam power level (not always the optimum beam power setting for a given weather condition)
What does the MIN to MAX setting on the GAIN selector do? What indication do you get if you move the selector out of the CAL selection?
1) Allows manual control of the beam strength
- MIN = Greater Beam Strength than CAL level
- MAX = most powerful Beam strength
2) When you move out of the CAL selection, MAN will appear on the ND.
When is it recommended to use a manual GAIN setting?
above FL250
What does the GND CLTR SPRS switch do? How is it operated?
1) When placed ON, eliminates the majority of ground clutter targets
2) Spring loaded to OFF position, must be held in the ON position for ground clutter suppression.
What is a Path Attenuation Compensation (PAC) indication
1) Attenuation has been detected (yellow alert bar appears at the top of the ND)
2) The system is advising that additional WX targets beyond what is currently being displayed MAY be present, but CANNOT be viewed.
When will a PAC alert display?
1) GAIN selector knob must be in CAL
2) Intervening WX (storm cell) must be within 80NM of the aircraft
