Engines and APU Flashcards
What is the meaning of the FLAP OPEN indication on the ECAM APU page. What happens when the Flap Fully Opens?
1) APU Air Intake Flap is Fully Open
2) APU starter motor is inhibited until the flap is fully open
What is the meaning of the LOW OIL LEVEL indication on the ECAM APU page. When would this appear?
1) APU oil tank quantity is sensed to be low
2) The indication would appear immediately when the APU MASTER SW pb is selected to ON and the aircraft is on the ground
What should you do if the LOW OIL LEVEL is indicated on the ECAM APU page on the ground
Don’t start the APU and contact maintenance for assistance.
What indications will you get when the APU is “ON SPEED”
1) AVAIL appears on the APU START pb and ECAM APU page
2) APU AVAIL appears on the ECAM Memo Section
What happens when the APU MASTER SW pb is turned ON
1) APU computer is enabled and performs a self test
2) Air Intake flap is commanded open
What happens when the APU MASTER pb is set to OFF or “Light Out”
APU computer is deactivated and APU shuts down (Normal Shutdown Sequence)
When will the APU MASTER pb show a FAULT
Automatic shutdown or failed start has occurred
Why must the aircraft batteries be on for all APU starts and when the APU generator is the sole source of electrical power
1) Permits the APU starter motor to connect to the aircraft battery buses, which are the only power source available to the starter motor
2) On the ground, in the event of an APU fire while the APU generator is the sole source of power, the batteries being on ensure a power source for proper APU shutdown and extinguisher discharge
What is the function of the APU BLEED pb and APU GEN pb
1) APU BLEED pb - When ON commands the APU bleed valve open
2) APU GEN pb
- “Light Out” APU generator will automatically energize once APU is on speed
- OFF - APU Gen is de-energized
What can APU bleed air be used for and NOT used for
1) Can be used for Engine Starts and AC Pack operation
2) Cannot be used for Wing Anti- Icing
What start malfunction can a FADEC not sense and therefore not automatically abort. How do you manually abort this?
Tailpipe Fire. Manually Abort by placing the respective ENG MASTER switch to OFF
How is continuous Ignition manually activated. What is the only indication that the system is active
After an engine start, cycle the ENG MODE selector from NORM to IGN/START.
IGNITION will appear in the memo section of the E/WD
How are the ignitors displayed on the ECAM ENGINE page
1) A or B appear at the lower portion of the page indicating which is the active ignitor
2) AB together indicates both ignitors are being used for that engine start or continuous ignition is active
Will FADEC independently alternate which ignitor is used with each start
Yes
What do the following E/WD N1 gauge’s indications mean
1) Green
2) Amber Tick Mark
3) Red Arc
4) Circle
5) Blue Arc
6) Boxed Amber Rev
7) Boxed Green Rev
1) Green - Digital and Analog N1 speeds
2) Amber Tick Mark - FADEC computed MAX N1 for current ambient conditions
3) Red Arc - Max permissible
4) Circle - Current position of associated TL
5) Blue Arc - difference between actual N1 and thrust commanded by the auto-thrust system
6) Boxed Amber REV - one or more of the blocker doors is not stowed or locked
7) Boxed Green Rev - all four blocker doors are fully deployed
