What is a stage boundary?
A planned checkpoint between stages in which the PM must escalated information on progress, risk, quality, and change to the PB who can make a decision to proceed, pivot, or terminate. It acts as a go/no go point.
When is the Managing a Stage Boundary (MSB) process process completed?
This is conducted at the natural end of each management stage or when an ER is submitted. It is not done at the end of the project as this is CP.
ESR is sent towards the end of a stage and not at the end of it.
What is the purpose of the Managing a Stage Boundary (MSB) process?
Purpose is to enable the PM to provide the PB with relevant so it can review the current stages, approve the next stage plan, review the updated project plan, review the level of risk, ensure the expected benefits are on track to be realised, and ensure CBJ.
An ER may trigger a pivot, or the PB may request that the project pivot based on the information provided in MSB.
How might external forces have an impact on the project?
External forces may extend the actual length of stages. It is important corrective action is taken.
What are the five PM activities of the Managing a Stage Boundary (MSB) process?
1 - Plan the next stage
2 - Update the Project Plan
a. Update to account for performance of last stage and changes to forecast of upcoming stage
3 - Update the BC
a. BC needs to be updated to reflect changes to external factors and nature of product
4 - Submit Stage End report
a. Stage results should be reported to the PB,
5 - Produce an Exception Plan
a. If a stage or project will exceed tolerances, and EP is needed
What does the End Stage Report consist of?
Account of progress from the last stage, plan for the next stage and the deliverables, updated project plan, updated risk log, up-to-date quality checks.
