PRINCE2 Agile - Progress theme Flashcards
How does PRINCE2 Agile handle progress?
Progress is very important in Agile. A lot of techniques track progress at the MDP level, but mature Agile environments can use the same techniques in a wider context.
Agile considers progress the amount of work completed and the amount of value delivered.
Some Agile techniques and concepts controls progress (burn-up/down charts, WIP board, WIP concept in kanban), but more fundamentally the core Agile values of transparency and empiricism also dictate good progress monitoring.
What are burn-down and burn-up charts?
Burndown charts show the amount of work is yet to be completed. It assumes the amount of effort will not change. Visual representation of lagging or ahead of progress. The total amount of work is 100% and it declines over time against an ideal value.
Burnup chart shows the amount of completed work and can handle an undefined total time. The total amount of work is shown with another line that can descend and ascend as work is removed and added.
They both aim to portray how much work has been completed and the velocity.
Only time from completed tasks should be shown on the BU/BD charts.
BU/BD charts are less effective when handling large tasks. You should break large tasks down as much as possible.
How should burn-down and burn-up charts be displayed?
Clearly for the team to see. Physically chart is ideal, but electronic can be used.
How can the PM protect and show progress in PRINCE2 Agile?
In PRINCE, progress is shown via reports. In PRINCE2, less reporting and more visibility.
PM should protect against outsiders requesting work from delivery team. If work needs to be added, work is pushed.
What is a Cumulative Flow Diagram (CFD)?
A CFD is a visual representation of status of each item that shows the amount of work in each status in each day.
WIP is the difference between the top and bottom lines. Space between lines shows velocity in each subteam
It is a good way to spot velocity and blockers.
How can “work incrementally” be defined?
Delivering product by product and starting small
