PRINCE2 Agile - Organisation theme Flashcards
How might the governance structure vary between Agile methodologies?
The roles and governance structure vary depending on the Agile methodology. Some have rigid roles (DSDM, Scrum) while others are more fluid and lean on the self-organising concept.
Agile teams are self-organising. Prefer to be coached and led as opposed to managed. They manage by exception
How does Agile differ from PRINCE2 on set responsibilities?
Agile emphasises the need for teams to self-organise, be empowered, and stay consistent, fostering shared responsibility, unlike the set responsibility in pure PRINCE2.
How does Agile differ from pure PRINCE2 on defined roles?
In PRINCE2 Agile, senior roles responsible for visioning have set roles, whereas less-senior roles are more fluid and not defined.
What are four of the set roles in some Agile methodologies?
- Scrum Master: Coaches the team on the Scrum process and eliminates impediments.
- Product Owner: Key stakeholder, cannot be the same as Scrum Master, and only one per project.
- Project Manager: Seen as redundant in Agile but essential in PRINCE2 Agile with different responsibilities.
- Requirements Engineer/Business Analyst: Gathers requirements and researches the environment.
How to blend pure PRINCE2 and PRINCE2 Agile in the Organisation theme?
Pure PRINCE2 focuses on high-level project management, while Agile focuses on low-level, day-to-day delivery. Their blending depends on the project, environment, and team structure.
The amount of outsourcing also impacts this.
Generally speaking, if a work package is easy, it can be handled as BAU using Agile, but if the work is complex, it should be handled more as PRINCE2 Agile with input from the Project/Team Manager.
A mature Agile environment will have a blended view of PRINCE2 project roles and Agile BAU roles.
What are the differences between PRINCE2 and PRINCE2 Agile in relation to the Organisation theme?
Agile emphasises team self-organisation and coaching, while PRINCE2 outlines a Team Manager with clear accountability. Agile has one Product Owner as the sole voice, whereas PRINCE2 has multiple stakeholders.
How can the Team Manager role be covered in PRINCE2 Agile?
Options include: 1. Omit the TM role and assign responsibilities. 2. Leave roles as is but assign a point of contact. 3. Create the TM role. 4. Absorb TM responsibilities.
How could the Team Manager responsibilities be split?
Responsibilities should sit within the Agile team: 1. Planning - Product Owner and Delivery Team. 2. Monitoring progress - Scrum Master and Delivery Team. 3. Liaising with PM and stakeholders - Scrum Master. 4. Managing risks - Scrum Master. 5. Final acceptance - Product Owner.
How is the relationship between the PM and Delivery Team established?
It is outlined in the work package and PID, approved by the PB. A Team Manager in Scrum does not work; PM can absorb TM responsibilities and nominate a point of contact.
How can PRINCE2 Agile be used in different industries?
Pure PRINCE2 defines PM roles without technical delivery roles, while Agile defines general delivery roles. Typically, roles include leading the team, representing the customer, creating the product, assuring quality, and coaching the team.
What is the ideal person count for an Agile team?
Seven, plus or minus two. If there are more, it may be better to spin out a new team.
What are the general roles in Agile?
- Subject Matter Expert (CSME): Split into Customer SME and Supplier SME, not full-time but allocated to the project.
- Customer representative (Senior User): Handles larger-scale feedback.
- Supplier representative (Senior Supplier): Handles larger-scale feedback.
- Project Assurance.
What is the attitude to specialisation in PRINCE2 Agile?
PRINCE2 Agile does not recommend having only one specialisation. It is better to share knowledge and upskill team members to reduce specialisation, aiming for specialised generalists.
How is stakeholder involvement managed in PRINCE2 Agile?
It is important to clarify what is needed from stakeholders. Frameworks like RACI can help assess stakeholder involvement.
What is a servant leader?
A servant leader leads delivery instead of managing it, ensuring team members have what they need, creating a more efficient and happier team.
What is Management of Value?
Management of Value (MoV) is about maximizing value in line with programme and project objectives and key stakeholder requirements.
What Agile role maps to the Senior User?
The Product Owner.
In PRINCE2 Agile, what is the main link between the PM and the delivery team?
The Team Manager.
What does the PE need to know in a PRINCE2 Agile environment?
They need to be familiar with the concept of value and how PRINCE2 integrates with MoV, broadly mapping to the Agile role of Sponsor.
What role does Project Assurance play in a PRINCE2 Agile project?
- Ensure PM and delivery team are using Agile appropriately. 2. Ensure Manage By Exception is used correctly. 3. Assess the TM-PM link.
What is the Product Owner responsible for?
Clearing expressing and prioritising the backlog items to achieve business goals, optimising value of delivery, and being the point of contact for a product or project.
How can it be challenging to insert the Product Owner into a project?
There may be too many viewpoints or too much variation in feedback scope for one person to manage. It may require splitting into multiple teams with one PO per team.
Who is responsible for the needs of the user?
The Product Owner represents and voices the needs of the user, but the Senior User remains ultimately responsible for realising the benefits.
How might one maintain standards in a self-organising, empowered team?
Ask team members to sign a work agreement or charter, containing values or rules, created, reviewed, and agreed by the team members.
