What is public opinion?
Distribution of individual preferences for or evaluations of a given issue, candidate, or institution within a specific population.
What is a random sample?
Every individual has a known and equal chance of being selected. (Not just one specific type of person)
What is the margin of error?
Range of percentage points in which sample accurately reflects population.
What is a universe?
A group of people who’s preferences we try to measure by taking a sample.
What is latency?
Political opinions that are held but not yet expressed.
What is manifest opinion?
Widely shared and consciously held view.
What is intensity?
How strongly individual holds opinion.
What is salience?
The relevancy or importance of an issue to an individual.
What is a panel survey?
Survey that tracks opinion change.
What is liberalism?
Belief that government can bring justice and equality of opportunity.
What does the 15th amendment do?
African Americans right to vote.
What does the 19th amendment do?
Woman right to vote.
What does the 23rd amendment do?
District of Columbia given electoral votes
What does the 24th amendment do?
Outlaws poll tax
What does the 26th amendment do?
Teens 18 and older can vote.
What does the Dawes Act do?
Regulates Native American’s rights (including right to vote)
What does the voting rights act do?
Prohibits racial discrimination in voting.
What are the 5 reasons why we don’t vote?
Certain groups not allowed to vote
Registration too difficult
We have to vote too often
Don’t pay attention/care
Lack of identifying parties with power
What did the mother voter bill do?
Attempt to increase voter turnout
What is voter fatigue?
Belief that any one vote from a person won’t make a difference.
What was the Australian ballot?
Why did it decrease voter turnout?
No one knows who you voted for, so you don’t get the rewards of the party or whoever you voted for.

Compulsory voting/registration
