Process which individuals screen out messages that do not conform to their own biases
What is selective perception?
Process by which individuals perceive what they want in media messages

What is audience fragmentation?
Growth of diversified media have scattered people. All sorts of media have different perspectives on politics so not everyone’s perspective will be influenced by one or two sources.

Gatekeeper- highlight what we should talk about.
Watchdog- look for controversial headlines (focus on the bad)
Scorekeeper- like a game, keep score and care about polls

They advise candidates and preserve their public image.
