abuse
subset of trauma defined by human perpetration; often chronic, known perpetrator identity; disruption of basic trust
PTSD
trauma/abuse characterized by intrusive re-experiencing, avoidance of reminders, negative alterations in mood and cognition, hyperarousal; delayed onset >6m post trauma
acute stress disorder
acute onset, 3d-1m post-trauma; emphasis on dissociative symptoms (derealization, depersonalization, numbness)
epidemiology
6.4-8.3% prevalence, 2:1 female-male ratio
PTSD risk factors
severity of trauma, perceived helplessness, dissociation at time of event, available support systems
treatment
1st line: antidepressants, 2nd line: mood stabilizers
