social anxiety disorder
fear and anxiety of social situations, early onset (0-25 y/o), >6m; performance (public speaking) vs. generalized SAD
generalized anxiety disorder
excessive worry in 2+ domains (family, health, $) >50% time for 6m with 3 symptoms (restlessness, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, insomnia, irritability)
specific phobias
extreme fear of specific object/situation, >6m
epidemiology of anxiety disorders
most common psych disorder, lifetime prevalence >20%, F>M 2:1; risk factor for depression, alcohol use, suicide; early onset with chronic progression
symptom clusters of anxiety disorder
panic attacks (sudden onset of fear + 4 addtl symptoms), anticipatory anxiety, avoidance
treatment for anxiety disorders
short-term cognitive behavioral therapy (months), SSRIs for >8w for panic disorder, SAD generalized, GAD; benzodiazepenes for acute/rapid onset
